What is Duritamsha?

In Vedic Astrology, the 27 Nakshatras are cyclical divisions split into three cosmic functional categories: Srishti (Creation – governed by Brahma), Sthiti (Maintenance – governed by Vishnu), and Samhar (Destruction – governed by Mahesh/Shiva). Starting from Ashwini, every third Nakshatra falls under the Samhar (Destruction) category (e.g., Krittika, Ardra, Ashlesha, etc.).

When any planet occupies the 3rd or 4th Pada (the specific degree zone between 6°40′ and 13°20′ within that Nakshatra) of a Samhar Nakshatra, that position is termed as “Duritamsha.”
